The C-SPAN civic bus made a special stop at Shaker High School Friday (May 22) as part of its "100 Schools in 100 Days" tour.

The bus was in town to congratulate Shaker sophomore Alexander Macina for his win in the 2009 C-SPAN Student Cam Challenge. Macina did his video documentary on how much money was spent for the 2009 elections. He worked alongside local politicians to make his video a huge success.

Corporate citizenship

Time Warner Cable places a high priority on good corporate citizenship and public service. By reaching out to local governments, educational institutions and non-profit organizations in the communities where we do business, we develop and provide programs, services and resources tailored to benefit customers and communities alike.

Underlying our company's commitment to local community service is the scope and reach of our national grassroots cable network. With nearly 14.6 million customers, Time Warner Cable serves - and is active in - more than 3,100 communities in 33 states.

A new focus in corporate giving

To help ensure our resources deliver maximum benefit to the community, TWC recently conducted a comprehensive review of our national and local philanthropic efforts.

An important conclusion of the review was that a more focused giving strategy will help TWC’s philanthropy create more meaningful and lasting benefit in the communities where we do business.

Determining a charitable focus was not a task we undertook lightly. We understand the needs of our communities – especially now - are deep and wide.  While meeting all those needs is not possible for one company, we believe more focused giving results is the most effective and efficient positive social impact in our communities.

Ultimately, we’ve decided to focus our giving on inspiring young people to build the skills they need – science, technology, engineering and math - to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.

Why this focus? Aligning our business and our philanthropy

The decline in young people’s interest in and appreciation of education and careers in these areas is a significant issue for our society. It puts our country at risk; and it puts our communities and our children at risk. By connecting young people to hands on learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, TWC strives to ensure that today’s youth will be prepared to solve the challenging problems of tomorrow.

Our country’s ability to use science, technology and innovation to solve problems has been the foundation for our quality of life, our security, our health, and our prosperity. Our company’s ability to use these same elements allows us to connect millions of people to the entertainment they want, the information they depend on, and the people they care about most. As a result, it creates a powerful link to the full strength of our company as well as to the talents of our employees, who make TWC a great company and live in the communities where we operate.

TWC recognizes the quality and importance of all the organizations in our community.  Our change in focus reflects the evolution of our philanthropic priorities and goals and not the effort and contribution of the many well-deserving community organizations such as yours.

Awards and Achievements

Working with community partners, we've been honored to be recognized over the years for our community efforts on a national, state and local level:

  • Special Olympics of New York Outstanding Corporation/Business Award

  • Wildwood Programs Outstanding Corporate Partner

  • The United Way Outstanding Achievement Award

  • The United Way Silver Employee Award

  • The United Way of Montgomery County Diamond Investors Award

  • Cable Television Public Affairs Association Beacon Award

Time Warner Cable also supports individual, non company-related projects that benefit local communities through our employees’ personal involvement. Four times each year, Time Warner’s EVG (Employee Volunteer Grant) program awards grants ranging from $500 to $3,000 to fund such varied non-profit local initiatives as pet adoption services, refurbishment of youth sports facilities, community environmental projects and equipment for day care facilities, to name just a few.

Time Warner Cable's community activism embraces corporate philanthropy as well. Each year Time Warner Cable donates several million dollars directly to non-profit organizations. Greater still are the tens of millions of dollars more of in-kind contributions provided through activities such as the production and distribution of public service announcements. These donations support both local initiatives and national non-profit organizations. Our educational outreach programs are underwritten by more than $3 million in annual funding across the divisions.

At Time Warner Cable, community service is more than just a buzzword. It’s woven into the fabric of who we are. And the very nature of our business offers a unique and powerful platform with which to serve our communities. We will keep building on that commitment as our products, services and technology continue to evolve.

Education

Cable in the ClassroomTime Warner Cable's main focus always has been to provide free educational support to those communities. Through initiatives such as Cable in the Classroom and Cable’s High Speed Education Connection, we use our vast network to deliver the resources of cable programming and technology, including High Speed Online access, at no cost to schools. Partnerships with national organizations, like the National Urban League and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, allow us to support and enhance the effectiveness of existing service organizations, extending the benefits of our technology to a broader, more inclusive audience.

We are constantly working to identify new areas of need that can be helped with Time Warner Cable’s local and national presence. Adopt-A-School initiatives, support for local symphonies, art and dance organizations, youth after school and mentoring activities, environmental concerns and economic development are just some of the areas that are covered by this emphasis on local community involvement.

Literacy

Extending the impact of Time Warner Cable’s commitment to its communities is the energetic and enthusiastic contribution of our employees. Across the country, Time Warner Cable employees are active volunteers in a wide variety of programs, devoting countless hours of personal time for community service projects. Time Warner’s literacy initiative, Time to Read, is the nation’s largest corporate-sponsored volunteer program of its kind; and Time Warner Cable employees account for the greatest number of participants among the company’s business units.
