Question:

Connecting existing High-Speed Internet subscribers with game consoles

Answer:

Internet Service Provider:

  • Earthlink
    • XBox Game Console - You will need an Ethernet connection. If you wish to connect the XBox to the Internet, you will need a second NIC or a hub for the XBox game console.
    • PS2 Game Console - You will need an Ethernet connection. At this time, only one IP address is available per account. In order to use your game console, you will have to disconnect your computer from the cable modem, connect your game console to the cable modem, then reboot your cable modem.  If you plan to use the computer AND the PS2 simultaneously, you will need to purchase a NAT router.
  • AOL
    • XBox Game Console - At this time, AOL does not support the XBox game console.
    • PS2 Game Console - You may need to order a second ISP service.
  • Roadrunner
    • XBox Game Console - You will need an Ethernet connection.

USB CABLE MODEM
If you don't have an Ethernet hub or router, then you may consider using a USB cable modem. A cable modem converts the broadband signal into data understandable to your wired device and vice-versa. If you have a cable modem that connects directly to your machine via USB, then you will need a second network card to connect to the game console. Note that if you have a USB Ethernet adaptor for use with your Cable Uplink you can use any of the other configurations since a USB Ethernet adaptor is basically just a type of network card. An additional card is ONLY needed if your Cable Modem connects directly to your machine via USB (no network cable)

ETHERNET CABLE
An Ethernet cable, usually category 5 cable, carries the broadband signal.

HUB/ROUTER
A hub/router splits the broadband data signal between Internet devices. Hub users must contact the broadband provider to order an IP address for every extra connected device. At this time, only Road Runner customers may order additional IP addresses for an additional charge.

SONY PLAYSTATION 2 - Basic Setup
You will need to run a setup software when installing your router software specific to your cable service and your PS2 network adaptor disc does the setup automatically. Your best bet is to purchase an all-in-one router with 4-port switch included, such as brands like Linksys, D-Link, 3COM, Netgear, Cisco, Orinoco, Asante, Proxim, SMC, or Siemens. These usually run between $75 to $125.

Technical support is limited to the capabilities of the Level 1 team (i.e., they will ping your cable modem). Any support beyond that will need to be directed to either Sony, Microsoft, or the game console retailer.
