DVR Cheat Sheets

  • What is a DVR?

DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder. A DVR is basically a super smart digital VCR; only it uses a built-in hard drive to store your shows, not tapes. Not exactly rocket science, eh?

For more information about recording a show or series, check out DVR Dancer - our online DVR tutorial that teaches you the basics of DVRing.

  • How do I get Time Warner Cable DVR?

To get your DVR on, call 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX right now.

  • How do I record my favorite series/show?

Highlight the name of the series/show you'd like to record in your on-screen guide and press the record button, and then choose the recording options you want. You can also search for the show/s you wish to record by channel, title or program type.

  • How do I record a channel all day while I am at work?

It's easy. As long as there is sufficient space available, you can manually set your DVR to record everything on that channel for the entire day. Just press the list key and then the B key to choose preferences. Then scroll through the options until you find "schedule a new manual recording". Hit select and simply choose the start and end times. Finally, confirm your recording by hitting the A button. Easy, eh?

  • Can you record more then one show at the same time?

You sure can. In fact, you can record up to two shows at the same time. Nice, huh?

  • Can I record one show while watching another?

In a word… yes. In two words… yes and definitely.

  • How do I know if my DVR is recording something?

When your DVR is recording (or scheduled to record), the program it's recording will turn red in your program guide. Plus, the red recording light on the front of your DVR will light up… it also makes an attractive night light, but that's another story.

  • What do the different "alert" colors mean?

Don't worry; these have nothing to do with Homeland Security, but they will help you to know what your DVR is getting up to.

Red: A DVR recording has been scheduled or a current show is being recorded.

Green: A specific event has already been purchased.

  • How do I ensure the one show I'm recording has priority over another?

Your DVR gives highest priority to the most recent recording request for a particular show. To make sure that a specific show records in the event of a tuner conflict, delete any old requests and submit a new one. This will make your most recent request the highest priority request. You can always try reasoning with your DVR, but you'll probably find the former approach more successful.

  • How do I adjust the start/stop time of my recording?

Go to the list of shows you have programmed to record and select the show you want to change. Then, select the program's preferences menu, and you should find a menu option for changing the start/stop times. Change the times however you want, and you're golden.

  • How can I resolve recording conflicts?

Let's face it; nobody likes conflict now, do they? So if there is a conflict, your DVR will display a friendly on-screen message asking you what you'd like to do next — usually, which shows you want to record, and which one you don't mind not recording. If you do not resolve the conflict, your DVR uses pre-determined rules to work out what to do.

  • How long are programs saved for?

You DVR is set-up to delete the oldest recordings first, as and when space is needed to record new programs. So, if you sort your recordings by the date on which they were recorded, you can see what will be deleted next. Nice and simple, eh. Also, you can save a program for as long as you want.

  • Can a save a recording for longer?

Yes. You can keep any recording for as long as you want by changing its save options. Simply select the program you wish to keep from shows you have recorded. Then select "change save time". Finally, select how long you want to keep your recording — it varies from 1 day to until I erase — and say goodbye to separation anxiety.

  • How can I tell how much space is left on my DVR?

You can go to the preferences area of your DVR to find out. Hit list on your remote, then the B "Preferences" button and in the upper left hand corner it will tell you have much recording space is left.

  • How many shows/hours can I record?

This depends on the make and model of your DVR but on average, a DVR can save 35 hours of SD programming. Check out the FAQ above to learn how to find out how much free space you have left.

  • How do I jump 15 minutes forwards?

Depending on your DVR box, you can press and hold the fast forward button. Also, by pressing the fast forward button on your remote three times, you can fast forward up to 4x normal speed. It's so simple, a monkey could do it, but then, they're hard to come by, so it's probably better if you do it yourself.

  • What happened to a show that I recorded? Why is it no longer on my list?

Unless it was a very recent recording, there's a good chance it was deleted to make space for new ones.

  • Can you fast forward or rewind live TV?

You can only rewind live TV. You can do this by pressing the rewind button. Also, pressing the instant replay button, you can jump back exactly eight seconds.
