Question:

Why did the digital transition happen?

Answer:

Broadcasters transitioned to digital in order to provide important benefits to consumers. Because digital broadcasting is more efficient, broadcasters require less spectrum to provide a better television-viewing experience. Now that the digital transition is complete, some spectrum will be turned over to fire and police departments for emergency communication; other spectrum will be auctioned off to companies to provide new wireless services.
