Is there a way to turn off or configure the popup alerts that appear in the lower right hand corner of my screen?

Answer:

Yes. Simply select Options directly from the popup alerts window to configure your alerts. You can turn off these notifications or change the amount of time they display. Additionally, in the Options panel (select Options from the Main Menu) you can manage these alerts individually for each service (Facebook, Twitter, AIM, etc.).
