Best Practices

Do not enable file and print sharing on your computer. Use of the file sharing feature increases the risk that other Internet users could gain access to any of the files on your computer's hard drive.

Keep your operating system and Internet browser up-to-date. Whenever a bug (error in programming) or a security risk is found in any kind of software, the producer of that software releases a correction program called a patch. When you download and install the patch it will correct the error(s) in the program, thereby decreasing the risk that your personal files and information will be accessed by other Internet users without your permission.

Obtain anti-virus software. Anti-virus software monitors your computer system for programs that are designed to damage or steal information. Having an anti-virus program installed on your computer is the most vital component of computer security. Further, it is very important to keep your anti-virus software updated with the latest virus information. You'll want to set your anti-virus software to download the latest anti-virus updates every week.

Avoid downloading programs from unknown sources. While having the ability to download software is one of the main advantages of having high-speed Internet access, you should never download any program from a web site that you do not trust. If you want to download a program from a website that you are unfamiliar with, make sure that your anti-virus software it is up-to-date.

Carefully analyze your security needs. If you store important information on your computer you may want to consider taking additional security precautions to protect your information. For instance, installing a firewall would give you the ability to control how other people connect to your computer. Alternately you could install an intrusion detection system (IDS), which monitors your Internet connection and alerts you if anyone attempts to access your computer without your permission.

Don't use your computer as a server. A server is a computer that allows other computers to connect to it and retrieve information from it. There are some commercially available programs (mostly multi-player computer games) that will turn your computer into a server while the program is running. This makes your computer more vulnerable. As a general rule, just be careful when using any type of program that will allow others to connect to your computer.

Use caution when giving out personal information. You should never give out your credit card or bank information to anyone you don't trust. You should never give out any personal information you aren't willing to share. As an added precaution, you might want to make sure that your credit card company offers fraud protection if you plan to shop on the Internet.

Familiarize yourself with your operating system. The more you know about the way your computer works, the more secure you can make your information. Many advanced operating systems such as Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OSX, UNIX or Linux offer additional security features.
