Governor
Gov. Perdue is the 81st governor of the State of Georgia. He is a Georgia native, born in Perry to a farmer and teacher in 1946. He earned his degree in veterinary medicine in 1971 from UGA. Gov. Perdue served in the U.S. Air Force and continues to be a licensed pilot, traveling Georgia in his own single-engine plane.
Gov. Perdue has been a businessman and member of the Houston County Planning and Zoning Board. He ran for and served in the state senate, where he was elected both Majority Leader and President Pro Tem by his colleagues.
Gov. Perdue is married to the former Mary Ruff of Atlanta. They have four children and two granddaughters. They also serve as foster parents for newborns awaiting adoption.

State Legislature
There are two houses in the Georgia legislature, the House of Representatives and the Senate.
There are 180 members in the House of Representatives. Columbus is represented by three members.
There are 56 Senators in the Georgia Senate.

U.S. House of Representatives
Rep. Sanford Bishop, Jr.
Rep. Sanford Bishop has served Georgia's Second District since his election in 1992. He is a native of Mobile, Alabama, the son of an educator and a librarian. He is a graduate of Morehouse College and of the Emory University Law School. He is an army veteran. After his discharge he lived in Columbus until 1996, where he practiced law. He is currently a resident of Albany. He is married to Vivian Creighton Bishop, the Clerk of the Municipal Court of Columbus. They have a grown daughter.
Rep. Bishop is a member of the Appropriations Committee.

U.S. Senate
Sen. Saxby Chambliss--Republican
Sen. Saxby Chambliss was elected in Nov. 2002 to become Georgia's junior Senator. Previously he represented the eighth congressional district for four terms, specializing in defense, budget, intelligence and agriculture issues. As U.S. Senator he serves on the Armed Services Committee, the Select Committee on Intelligence, the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Rules Committee. Sen. Chambliss holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from UGA and a JD from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He and his wife, Julianne were married in 1966 and have two children and two grandchildren. They make their home in Moultrie.

Sen. Johnny Isakson--Republican
Sen. Isakson served in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 2004. Prior to that, he was in the real estate business and other, related, entrepreneurial ventures. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and State Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 1990. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and served in the Air National Guard. He is married to Diane and they have three children and four grandchildren.
