With these awards, we honor all teachers and hope the winners will encourage others to follow their lead, bringing enrichment and innovation to our nation's classrooms. Frozen Math Treats:  Students created and learned how to make a new ice cream treat and developed packaging for it.  Using the Internet and The Food Network, they studied marketing of this treat through research and guest speakers, created a PowerPoint ad campaign and took a field trip to Cold Stone Creamery to observe a similar business operation up close.

The Government Groove:  Students were divided into teams to learn about North Carolina’s state and local government.  Using the Internet, each group researched their topic and wrote a song about their part of government.  The students then created a video that demonstrated and showcased their knowledge.

IKIDAROD:  The teachers designed a simulation of the Iditarod, where mushers race across Alaska.  It was a cross-curriculum project that culminated in a race staged the day before the actual Iditarod.  The kids were the "dogs" and ran a 4-mile segment of the beach in a sled dog harness designed by the teams.  For the month of February, students participated in Iditarod math, history, English, science and physical training.

Hometown Heroes:  The Story of North Canton:  This is a documentary produced collaboratively by the North Canton Hoover High School Video Productions II and Broadcast Journalism classes. The documentary chronicles the varied contributions provided by the residents of North Canton during WWII, as verified by extensive personal interviews, online resources, written primary and historical sources, and rare film footage.

Making Connections:  Students studied the building of electrical circuits on the computer and in reality.  They conducted a Teacher Training Workshop for 5th Grade teachers and also trained 5th graders about circuits. The PBS program "Hometime" was used to show the students that there are real life applications for the electrical circuits they create.

See the Sea:  The students learned about ocean life through books, PBS, The Weather Channel, The Discovery Channel and The History Channel, hands-on experiences, research and a trip to a touch tank that allowed students to "See the Sea." Each student created books and other products to reflect their learning.

Earthquakes & Tsunamis Are Puzzling:  The purpose of this project was to gain a thorough understanding of earthquakes and tsunamis - how to plan for them and be knowledgeable about each.  The cable programs such as The Weather Channel, CNN and The Discovery Channel and Internet websites used gave the students realistic images and concrete evidence to demonstrate nature's wonder.

Patterns & Quilts and The South:  The students created patterns using pattern blocks while working on a unit in math and combined it with a writing assignment. They used the cable program "Clues in the Quilts" from HGTV to show how quilt patterns were used by slaves to show the route to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

A Piece of My Heart:  Visualizing Vietnam:  To give students a real understanding of the Vietnam War, the students used the power of cable to study TV shows including M*A*S*H, China Beach and a Nebraska Educational Television documentary produced on Vietnam nurses.   They also reviewed news footage from CBS News as well as programs on The History Channel.  Vietnam Vets came in to the class to give the students a personal experience.  The project culminated when they flew to Washington, D.C. over Veteran's Day and visited Arlington National Cemetery, The Vietnam Wall and the Vietnam Nurse's Memorial.

Making Connections Through Puppetry:  The cross curricular goal for this project was for 5th graders to design and create a paper mache hand puppet. After the hand puppets were finished students were put into groups of five to write a play that they then would perform with their puppets for the Kindergarten classes.

Dickens High Tea:  The students used TV programming from A & E, Cable in the Classroom and CNN, technology resources, reading and analyzing the novel "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens to explore the idea of social commentary in present day society and the Victorian Age.  The students delved into an informative yet creative journey using a variety of genres.

Discovery & Beginnings:  This project incorporated core curriculum areas to educate students about colonial life and times. Students faced the key events leading to the founding of colonies in the United States. Cable programming such as A&E and PBS allowed students to see first person narratives and video clips which helped history "come alive" and fostered awareness of the time period values.

Heartfelt Heroes:  The six-month unit began with students writing the definition of a hero. They then read "The Outsiders" and analyzed the characters to find elements of heroism. The cable programs from A & E, The History Channel and The Discovery Channel were essential to the project because they wove a connecting thread in history form the early Roman period to the present.

Deep in the Heart of Texas:  Fifteen Kindergarten students created a short movie, "Deep in the Heart of Texas," during Texas History Month in March to document the lessons they learned.  The main objective was to increase students' knowledge and understanding of Texas life and culture. The students watched "Reading Rainbow" on PBS.

I’m Just Like Everyone Else:  This unit offered students with disabilities the opportunity to participate in a seven-week video production course which enabled them to learn the skills needed to create slideshows, conduct interviews, write scripts and storyboards, and create short issue-related videos and PSAs.

A Step Back in Time:  An interdisciplinary Civil War unit was designed to involve 8th grade Social Studies and English classes. Students were exposed to primary source documents, historical data, issues of the war, literature, music, clothing and the culture of the era. Video streaming was used throughout the unit to show short clips that sparked discussion.  Other sources included PBS, HGTV, HBO, The Family Channel and the Internet.

Where in West will the Panther Be Next:  This project involves creating multimedia-learning experiences of today (videos, web games) to preserve yesterday. The 7th & 8th  graders created materials that highlighted their community and allowed themselves, future students, community members and tourists to learn more about West Allis.  Cable sources included The Discovery Channel, The Travel Channel and The History Channel.

Presidential Palette:  A cross-curricular, integrated venture that encompassed the 2004 presidential election process as well as a research project on presidential history. For five months the students lived the life of a president from his candidacy to his election and inauguration and concluded with his place in history.  Cable resources such as A & E, CNN, Fox News, The History Channel and MSNBC were the foundation for this project.

Let’s All Get Along:  Individual students wrote their definition of "Tolerance" and then they formed groups to consolidate the definitions into one. The students were then involved in various activities depicting the treatment of diverse people in varying situations. The learning objective was for students to recognize and respect differences in individuals and practice tolerance and acceptance of these differences.  Sources used to educate the students on diversity include Nickelodeon and The Discovery Channel.

Awesome Health:  The student’s task was to persuade others to make healthful choices in their daily lives.  Eighth grade students choose a Health topic, researched, created a flow chart, story board and finally a 30-second PSA which they shot and edited.  CNN news stories, as well as programming from The History Channel, Discovery-Health and PBS served as inspiration and examples for the students.
