We proudly salute the winners of the 2006 Time Warner Cable 17th Annual National Teacher Awards. With these awards, we honor all teachers and hope the winners will encourage others to follow their lead, bringing enrichment and innovation to our nation's classrooms. "China & Ohio: Learning through Citizenship, Literature and Technology"
Grades: 7 & 8.  Students from Starling were paired and connected with Weifang #2 School in China. The students read three different versions of Asian Cinderella and did an in-depth literature analysis. In January, a video conference was held for the Starling students to listen to the Weifang students' oral presentations of their written subjects.

"To Serve and To Honor"
Eleventh & 12th graders worked in a variety of different groups to find ways to honor our veterans.  They interviewed local veterans and current servicemen and women to produce a 60-minute documentary on their experiences. Students helped to design, publicize and raise funds for the project.

"Local Government and the Need for a Community Center"
Seventh graders researched responsibilities of locally elected officials and created a flow chart of their local government. A PowerPoint presentation was created and edited by the students analyzing the importance and need for a community center provided by the local government.

Watkins Glen Elementary School

"Discovering Native Americans, an American Snapshot Presentation"
Students in 4th grade used their new elementary school TV studio to report on their Native American social studies unit. They kept journals for two months as they experienced a variety of lessons. Next they videotaped interviews with guest artists and fellow students and shared several of their own creative writing and art pieces. The finished product was shown on their local access Time Warner channel five.

"Dream Job Activity"
Grades: 9-12. The guidelines for the Communication Applications Curriculum include preparing for a Job Interview. The students kept a journal that had to do with what they wanted to do in life. They watched "30 Days" from the FX network, which featured a couple who spends 30 days trying to survive on two minimum wage budgets. They used the computer lab to help identify each student's strengths, explore interests and set goals.

"The Mysteries of the Titanic"
Fourth graders were presented with the challenge to figure out how the largest ship in the world sank on her voyage in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The students discovered through observation and investigation "The Mysteries of the Titanic" in greater depth.

"Student Samurai Cinematographers"
The 7th graders made movies about samurai warriors during the medieval period and the present era.  The project incorporated literature, the social studies curriculum and the community. The students watched "Samurai Warrior" on The History Channel and programs on National Geographic.

"Catch the Wave - Surfing from Maine to the Midwest"
Grade 4. Through the use of an integrated unit, students discovered the similarities and differences between farming in the Midwest and farming in Maine. They learned the many ways people farm the oceans, forests and land. Through the use of Cable in the Classroom programming, reading, writing, and hands on activities, the students were able to develop an understanding of farming in the past and farming today.

"Our Local Greatest Generation - An Oral History of Veterans from the WWII era through the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan"
Grades: 10-12. This oral history project used digital video technology to capture and share the memories of men and women that lived through some of the most important history altering events of the 20th and 21st centuries. Students studied and researched many different aspects of various wars in our past. The students learned how to use both digital video and video editing technology while working on this project. The students conducted interviews with veterans and posed challenging questions.

"Controlling Infection by Influencing Behavior and Attitude"
Grades: 9-12. In addition to existing readings and lectures used to teach the infection control unit in the health services classes, several cable resources were incorporated to provide visual reenactments and historical information in an attempt to make lasting impressions on the students.

"Walk Like an Egyptian"
Grades: K-6. The cross-curricular goal for this project was for the students to visit the Egyptian exhibit at the "Dayton Art Institute" and create 2-D and 3-D art work while exploring and learning about another culture other than their own.

"The Book Club"
Grades: 1-3 & 10-12. "The Book Club" was developed to promote reading and the enjoyment of literature to children throughout their school district. This is a weekly reading show produced collaboratively by the North Canton Hoover High School Video Productions and Broadcast Journalism classes. Each week, students from grades 1-3 go to the high school as guests for the show. Each show features the reading of two books.

"Where We've Come From, Where We Are: Immigrant Voices of English Language Learners"
Grades: 3-5. These students created a multimedia PowerPoint presentation with personal photos and text to describe their own families' immigration to the United States. They included family photos before arriving in the United States and their family photos in America. Students researched data about their country of origin.

"Survivor: Little Flower School-A Cross-Curricular Unit"
Grade: 7. In this unit, the students examined different types of conflict, and the various reactions to the conflict. The students explored literary conflict, conflict in the news, conflict in history, and conflict resolution. The project culminated with the creation of a clay animation feature from still images.

"Walk Like an Egyptian"
Grade 5. The students learned about many areas related to the study of ancient Egypt including mummification, pharaohs, geography, customs, daily life and hieroglyphics in this unit touching on all subject areas and integrating technology. The objective was to bring ancient Egypt to life for the 5th graders by utilizing the Internet while integrating field studies, actual artifacts, guest speakers and classroom activities allowed the students to become immersed in their learning.

"Veterans' History Project"
Grade: 10. The students interviewed local veterans, in compliance with Social Studies standards incorporating the use of oral history techniques. The students selected veterans and relatives who were then interviewed using videotape and audiotape modes. Students then toured the National Cemetery in Dayton and participated in VA Hospital's Veterans Day activities.

"Making Traxx with Paw's"
Grade: K-8. Students used the Everyday Explorer program created by National Geographic for this project. This project consisted of their own high tech version of "letter boxing," creating original games used for family game night and the development of a history gallery in the school hallways as a communities teaching tool.

"Flower Power - Girls Blossoming Together"
Grade: 4. A movie created by fourth grade girls resulted in a positive attitude change among students.  When four young ladies were having difficulty getting along with other students in their classroom, the teachers decided to try to make the girls more aware of their behavior by having them create a public service announcement about bullying. They wrote short scripts, made basic storyboards, created visuals, took photographs and then combined all the elements using iLife. As a result, the project has expanded to include public service announcements with various student groups.

Robin Mickle Middle School

"What's Happening @your library™"
Grades: K-12. This was a collaborative library advocacy campaign. Time Warner Cable and students, teachers and a media specialist from Lincoln Public Schools worked together to produce video segments that highlighted student activities in library media centers. The six video segments, approx. 5-7 min. in length, aired on the public access channel and are available on the local area network to be used by others for information literacy instruction. TWC of Lincoln took footage shot in their media centers to develop a professional lead-in segment that was the opening of each program.

"English/Language Arts Holocaust Unit"
Grade: 8. The unit primarily focused on a central theme "Individual Choice and Responsibility: Standing Up for What is Right." It includes a historical framework. Students read a variety of materials including short stories, poetry and novels. Students used video information, the Internet, and book research for a culminating project.
