How Do I Report a Security Violation?
You can use the rrsecuritynyc@nyc.rr.com email address to report a security violation committed by a Road Runner customer. Please include substantial documentation of the violation, including logs indicating when the attacks occurred and the IP address of the attacker (See How do I format complaints?. If a customer of another online service has committed a security violation, you should contact their security coordinator at the abuse email address for that provider.
How do I format complaints?
General Format
Road Runner cannot accept logs that are not in plain text (ASCII) format. Do not attach files to your e-mail. All reports must be included in the body of the message.
Email Complaints
If you are reporting an e-mail incident, it is important that you forward the e-mail with full headers. Without the headers, we will be unable to determine where the e-mail originated, and therefore we will not be able to assist you.
How can I obtain full headers?
Netscape:
Open the email; go to the view menu; pull the 'Headers' menu over and click on 'all'. Highlight the headers displayed in the email and copy them into the email you send to us.
Outlook / Outlook Express 4.0:
Open the email; go to the view menu; select options. You will see a box labeled 'Internet Headers'. Highlight and copy (right click, copy) these into the email you send to us.
Outlook / Outlook Express 5.0:
Open the email; go to the file menu; select properties. A box will appear with a general and details tab. Click on the details tab and copy the headers of the message from there.
Eudora:
Open the email; find the small button that says Blah, Blah, Blah; click on that button. You will see the full headers displayed, highlight them and copy them into the email you send to us.
Usenet Complaints
If you are reporting a Usenet incident, it is important that you forward the post with full headers. Without it, we will be unable to determine where the Usenet post originated, and therefore we will not be able to assist you.
If you are reporting an incident that you believe to be off-topic to the Usenet group, please include the section of the group's Charter, showing that the post is off-topic.
Fraud
If you are reporting an incident of fraud, it is important that you include detailed time stamped logs in plain text format so that we may assist you.
Road Runner will not accept logs that are not in plain text (ASCII) format. Do not attach files to your e-mail. All logs must be included in the body of the message.
Your logs must contain the following information in order for Road Runner to process them:
- Date of Incident
- Time of Incident
- Time Zone that logs are captured in
- Source IP Address or Host Name
- Destination IP Address or Host Name
NOTE: If the individual that posted or instigated the incident was not using or in any way related to the Road Runner system or does not contain content that is maintained by Road Runner, then Road Runner would not be the proper entity to contact. We are not permitted to take any action for non-Road Runner related issues.
If that is the case, and you wish to pursue the matter, you may want to contact the person responsible for the incident, or the Internet Service Provider through which the content was posted.
