File and Print Sharing
What is it?
File and Print Sharing allows you to share your files and printer with other subscribers, via the Internet, including the ability to read, view, write to, modify or copy the files, and/or print them.
What are the security risks associated with it?
File and print sharing increases the risk that other Internet users can gain access to any of the files on your computer's hard drive. There are other, more secure ways to share your files with other Internet users - emailing those files you want to share with someone else directly to that person; or, configuring your computer to require the use of a password to access your files.
What is Time Warner Cable's policy?
For residential customers: It is our policy to disable this feature for all residential customers. This is completed at two locations, the customer's PC and the Road Runner network. The Road Runner installation software systematically disables the feature on your PC as part of the installation process. To enhance the security of the Road Runner network, Time Warner Cable does not allow file and print sharing for residential customers.
For commercial customers: This feature is enabled for all commercial customers. This is completed at two locations, the customer's PC and the Road Runner network. The Road Runner installation software systematically enables the feature on your PC as part of the installation process. We will, however, disable file and print sharing for commercial customers, upon request.
How can I disable or more securely enable file and print sharing?
The Road Runner On-Line Help Desk (see help.rr.com) has step-by-step instructions on disabling and more securely enabling the file and print sharing functionality on your PC.
For commercial customers interested in disabling this functionality, you must also contact the Business Services Department at (212) 598-1750 to request that file and print sharing be disabled at the network level as well.
