Cable Modem Services

The Internet is a wonderful tool and can provide you with the ability to visit new and exciting places. As a member of the Internet community however, you owe it to yourself and others to protect yourself from potential risks to your computer and your personal information. To better prepare you for your journey down that information highway, we have listed some helpful tips on how to protect yourself while online.

General Overview:

Time Warner Cable will never ask for your password or any other personal account information through e-mail or over the phone.

Do not give out personal information. This should be a household rule when you are using the Internet. If you have children, make sure they understand this rule. Time Warner Cable also recommends that you do the following:

Disable Print and File sharing
If you choose not to disable Print and File sharing, be sure to create a password consisting of a mix of numbers, symbols, and letters in both upper and lower case.

Keep all security patches and fixes current
Check the home page of your operating system vendor for details on updates. This includes patches and fixes for software found on your system.

Do not run server or file sharing services on your computer
Any service that allows unrestricted access on your system (FTP, Mail servers, Game servers, file sharing services like Kazaa, etc.) provides a way for others to access your system.

Time Warner Cable strongly recommends that you periodically update your firewall and antivirus program. If you do not have either of the programs, we have listed several links for antivirus programs in the How can I protect my computer and personal information? section of this site.

If you are using a personal firewall for your computer and you receive port scans or Denial of Service attacks from a Road Runner customer, you should email abuse@rr.com with full logs of the event. This activity is strictly prohibited in the Acceptable Use Policy and the Time Warner Cable Terms of Service Agreement.

If the source of the attack is someone other than a Road Runner customer, you should contact that user's Internet Service Provider.

Here are some websites that can help:
