Crystal Apple Awards
National Teacher Awards
Time Warner Cable actively seeks ways to support educators and institutions that help shape our country’s future. Through our national Crystal Apple Teachers Awards, we recognize 20 exemplary K-12 projects for creative use of cable television programming or technology during the school year. With these awards, we honor teachers that strive to enhance the learning experience in the classroom using TWC’s free cable connections and commercial-free programming. In 2003, two San Antonio teachers were chosen for their winning projects and in 2004, three San Antonio area teachers were chosen as finalists for their projects.

Time Warner Cable-San Antonio (TWC-SA) and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation will partner for the fifth consecutive year to support music education in economically disadvantaged schools in the San Antonio community. In total, TWC-SA and VH1 have restored instrumental music programs in 17 schools, totaling $385,000 worth of new musical instruments.
The Common Good For the fifth consecutive year, Time Warner Cable and C-SPAN, the nation’s public affairs television network, challenged high school students to think about THE COMMON GOOD by answering an essential question being debated by elected officials and in communities across the country: Is the Common Good Served by Today’s Campaign and Election Process? In 2003, Mason Turner, a student at Smithson Valley High School, successfully answered the question debated last year in the form of an essay and was one of 10 winners chosen nationwide. Mason and his teacher won an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC.

Media Literacy Campaign
The Texas Media Literacy Program is a collaboration between the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Texas Cable & Telecommunications Association (TCTA), and the local Cable Systems. It is a curriculum-training program designed for middle and high school teachers to help our students to become more powerful consumers. Time Warner Cable is proud to support the school districts in San Antonio by providing them with the training materials that will furnish our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about the barrage of media messages they receive on a daily basis.

Time Warner Cable’s commitment to local schools began as a founding member of Cable in the Classroom, a public service initiative of the cable television industry, in 1989. Through this program we provide free cable television and Road Runner High Speed Internet service to local schools that qualify for the program. By providing access to more than 540 hours of commercial-free educational programming each month by our 39 member networks, educators can receive curriculum-related support materials to aid them in the classroom. For more information on the program, please go to: www.ciconline.org
Educational Programs
Over the years, Time Warner Cable has had a strong commitment to promoting education and to being involved in ongoing partnerships with many organizations in San Antonio. TWC is a long-time supporter of the San Antonio Education Partnership that provides scholarship opportunities to low-income students striving for educational excellence.
TWC also partners with The Alamo Community College District (ACCD) to extend scholarship opportunities to economically disadvantaged students majoring in engineering or communications.
