We believe that corporate responsibility is more than just a buzzword. It’s woven into the fabric of who we are and what we do. Our corporate responsibility programs are focused on supporting and strengthening the communities in which we do business.
Education
Education is critical to success in the 21st Century, and our educational efforts are designed to prepare the next generation of leaders and workers. Through initiatives such as Cable in the Classroom and Cable’s High Speed Education Connection, we use our vast network to deliver the resources of cable programming and technology at no cost to schools across our footprint. As of 2008, more than 14,000 of those schools are connected, making it possible for more than eight million students to receive hundreds of hours of quality, commercial-free educational programming every month. Recognizing the need to expand access to these resources beyond the classroom, we also offer free cable modem and High Speed Online service to public libraries. Working with national and local partners, the company provides free Road Runner™ service to select community centers as well.
To foster use of technology as an effective learning resource, Time Warner Cable, for the past 20 years, has honored classroom projects and the teachers who develop them with the Time Warner Cable National Teacher Awards. In addition, some of our divisions sponsor Star Teacher Awards, where students nominate those educators who have had a positive impact on their lives.
Community
Time Warner Cable's community support embraces philanthropy on the local and corporate level. In addition to active participation in each of the hundreds of communities we serve, each year, we donate several million dollars directly to nonprofit organizations. Greater still are the tens of millions of dollars more of in-kind contributions provided through activities such as the production and distribution of public service announcements. These donations support both local initiatives and national nonprofit organizations.
Environment
At Time Warner Cable, we're committed to decreasing our business impact on the environment. Our efforts are focused on fleet management, paperless operations such as our eCommerce site, power usage and recycling. In addition, we are using the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) sustainability rating system as a standard protocol for all facility construction projects. We are currently seeking LEED Certification at the Silver Level or better for five separate projects across the country.
