The historic Country Club Plaza is one of the country’s first shopping areas to offer continuous Wi-Fi high speed Internet service outdoors throughout the entire shopping district. Thanks to a partnership between the Kansas City Division of Time Warner Cable and Highwoods Properties, the Plaza is now a Road Runner Speed Zone providing blazing fast wireless Internet service throughout the outdoor space in a 15-block area.
Continuous Wi-Fi connectivity allows people to move from one end of the Plaza to the other while maintaining their connection to the Internet. The Road Runner Speed Zone runs east to west from JC Nichols Parkway to Jefferson Street and north to south from 47th Street to Ward Parkway.
Gayle Terry, Director of Marketing for Highwoods Properties, which owns and manages the Plaza, said, “We are pleased to partner with Time Warner Cable and believe that adding this amenity to our outdoor space will enhance our customers’ enjoyment of the open-air ambience, art and beauty of the Plaza.”
The Wi-Fi system uses radios strategically positioned on rooftops throughout the Plaza. Currently, 11 radios are in place. A twelfth radio is scheduled to be added. While Time Warner Cable has built other hot spots in Kansas City, this is the first time it has built an entire wireless mesh network.
“To use the Plaza’s wireless Road Runner Speed Zone service, you just open your laptop and Road Runner Speed Zone will be one of the options available for wireless connectivity,” says Damon Porter, Director of Public Affairs for the Kansas City Division of Time Warner Cable. “Click the link and it will direct the user to the Speed Zone splash page.”
“As the area’s largest Internet Service Provider, we are particularly pleased to note that Wi-Fi service on the Plaza is free for Kansas City’s 200,000 Road Runner customers.”
Anyone who doesn’t have a Road Runner login and password will be able to use a credit card to purchase the service for 24 hours for $8.95. A month of access for non-Road Runner customers costs $34.95.
“We expect the Road Runner Speed Zone Wi-Fi service will be in high demand from local and visiting business people, tourists, and residents who frequent the Plaza and want to enjoy the Plaza’s world-class outdoor amenities while using their laptop computers,” Porter says.
The Country Club Plaza was developed by JC Nichols in 1922 and was the country’s first suburban shopping center. Today, totaling nearly one million square feet of retail and restaurant space, the open-air, Spanish inspired district continues to serve both the local and regional customer with a collection of exclusive national tenants and original local businesses.
