KANSAS CITY – Time Warner Cable’s new initiative to inspire youth to connect to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) opportunities in their communities was showcased in Kansas City last weekend. TWC teamed up with Sally Ride Science and the University of Missouri – Kansas City to provide an exciting opportunity for young women to experience hands-on science during the November 8, 2009, Sally Ride Science Festival. At science festivals throughout the United States, Sally Ride Science brings science to life and inspires upper elementary and middle school girls to think about the vast range of careers in science.
The Kansas City Festival brought together hundreds of upper elementary and middle school girls, parents and teachers for a day of science and socializing. The young ladies attended discovery workshops led by local scientists and engineers while parents and teachers attended workshops on ways to support students' interests in science and math. The festival also included a street fair with hands-on activities, booths, and music.
The highlight of the festival was an inspiring talk by astronaut Dr. Linda Godwin, a Missouri native and veteran of four space flights with over 38-days logged in space. In addition to her keynote talk, Dr. Godwin spent time answering questions and signing autographs for the very excited young attendees. Astronaut Godwin’s keynote talk and her direct interaction with these young girls provided a wonderful opportunity for her to speak of her passion in the area of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). After participating in hands-on science experiments, attending fun and educational workshops and hearing Astronaut Godwin’s inspiring talk, this group of young women were bubbling over with excitement and enthusiasm for science!
Sally Ride Science provides quality programs and products that educate, entertain, engage and inspire youth to pursue opportunities in science and math. Because we believe that science, technology, engineering and math education is critical for our youth and nation, TWC was excited to team with Sally Ride Science and encourage the Kansas City community to become more engaged in STEM programs. The goal of Time Warner Cable’s new cause initiative is to inspire young people to build the skills they need in science, technology, engineering and math to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Teaming up with Sally Ride Science was a wonderful opportunity for TWC to assist in raising awareness and visibility for STEM in the Kansas City area.
