Local organizations receive grants from Time Warner Cable

Funds raised through Time Warner’s annual Adult Literacy Campaign

Time Warner Cable Mid-Ohio Division has awarded $5,000 grants to the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association and Somali Senior and Family Services, both based on Cleveland Avenue, as a result of its annual Adult Literacy Campaign.  The campaign raised a total of $53,145 to support adult literacy programs throughout central, northwest and southeast Ohio.  The company’s 2006 Adult Literacy Campaign netted among the largest amounts ever in its 17-year history.

Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association will use the $5,000 grant to enhance the English as a Second Language and literacy work in the Capital Park community in northeast Columbus.  The grant will allow for additional instructional hours to focus on pre-literate students, much needed testing support and classroom sets of essential textbooks.

Somali Senior and Family Services will use the $5,000 grant to help adult participants with life needs so they can learn English or build on the English language in an effort to become more self-reliant, employable, and prepared to integrate fully into a larger American society.

Other Columbus area recipients are:

• Asian American Community Services - $2000 to help bridge the language barrier in Asian immigrant and refugee communities.  The grant will allow for additional instructional hours and the purchase of essential textbooks.
• Columbus Literacy Council (CLC) - $5,000 toward the Business literacy program to provide programming that helps learners understand basic business concepts and apply these concepts to their lives to attain self-sufficiency.
• Dominican Learning Center - $5,000 to provide adults who are American-Marginalized and International struggling readers with a program to improve their comprehension skills through skill-building books and computer software.
• Godman Guild & Ohio State University, Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing - $5,000 to continue building a series of reading, writing and computer literacy workshops focused on the needs of adult students who read/write below the 6th grade level.

The remainder of the funds has been distributed among 20 other adult literacy agencies throughout central, northwest and southeast Ohio.

Time Warner Cable’s Adult Literacy Campaign is held annually during the month of August, when cable installation fees are donated to the literacy effort.  Since the campaign began in 1990, Time Warner Cable has donated more than $500,000 to local adult literacy agencies.

Beth Stock, director and ESOL instructor of Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, said, “We feel tremendous gratitude for the gift of the Time Warner Literacy grant.  On behalf of the many refugees who will benefit, I thank you for this generous contribution to our work.”

Abdi Warsame, executive director of Somali Senior and Family Services, said, “This grant helps us to fulfill our mission to improve the well-being and quality of life of Somalis in central Ohio by empowering them through education and training.”

Time Warner Cable Mid-Ohio Division teamed up once again with “ESPN College GameDay” host and former OSU quarterback Kirk Herbstreit as the spokesperson for the 2006 literacy campaign.  The Division has been honored locally and nationally for its ongoing commitment to adult literacy efforts in central Ohio.  In 2001, the company received the “Corporate Caring Award” from Business First newspaper for its Adult Literacy Campaign and also received a Beacon Award and the ESPN Good Sports Award from the Cable Television Public Affairs Association recognizing the campaign’s success.  In 1995, Time Warner Cable received the Advancement of Literacy Award from the American Library Association.
