News 14 Carolina Debuts "Capital Tonight" on April 2, 2012

Show formerly known as "Political Connections" expands to five nights a week and re-launches as "Capital Tonight"

Release Date: 03/29/2012

Raleigh, NC (March 29, 2012) – 2012 may become the biggest political year in North Carolina history. The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, the Presidential race, the race for NC Governor, Congressional and State Legislative races, plus controversial referenda ensure many of the biggest stories of the year will involve politics.

Beginning April 2, News 14 Carolina is redefining how local television news covers politics in North Carolina by launching “Capital Tonight,” a live, half-hour show airing Monday-Friday at 7:00pm. The show will also be featured on Time Warner Cable’s Carolina On Demand with select interviews and elements being posted to

“As News 14 Carolina turns ten years-old, we’re proud to launch the state’s only nightly program devoted to state government, politics and the decisions that affect all of us,” said Alan Mason, vice president and general manager for News 14 Carolina. “We plan to inform, educate and debate the important issues facing North Carolina.”

News 14 Carolina is one of only a handful of news organizations in North Carolina with a full-time correspondent assigned to cover the state legislature, a position that has been in place since the station launched 10 years ago. Hosted by anchor Tim Boyum with contributions from award-winning senior political reporter, Loretta Boniti, “Capital Tonight” will consist of interviews and in-depth conversations with news-makers and state, local and federal elected officials about the latest political issues.

"For six years, I've had the honor to host our weekly show, “Political Connections,” and showcase more than 500 interviews with North Carolina's most influential leaders,” said Boyum. “There is no better time to expand our statewide coverage even further with “Capital Tonight” than in a year when North Carolina will find itself in the political spotlight."

The show will benefit from News 14 Carolina’s 24/7 statewide news network featuring newsrooms in Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, Wilmington, Newport, Fayetteville and Salisbury. Reports from the Washington D.C, Bureau will also be included on a regular basis.

Additionally, Tim Boyum will send out daily show topics, links and questions to generate conversation with the state's top politicos via Twitter, while a web producer will live tweet during the show with public comments from both Twitter and Facebook also being featured.
