News 14 Carolina to Air Historical Holocaust Violins of Hope Program

Release Date: 04/11/2012

Charlotte, NC (April 11, 2012) – On Sunday, April 15, News 14 Carolina will premiere a half-hour special program titled Violins of Hope which chronicles the history of 18 violins that were played in concentration camps during World War II.

This collection of violins, restored by Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein, has never been exhibited or played in North or South America. Each violin has a documented history. Many were owned and played by prisoners in concentration camps and were the only source of comfort for prisoners.

News 14 Carolina was provided exclusive access to produce the special program which will air at 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Sunday. “I can’t think of a more suitable time than just before Holocaust Remembrance Day to tell this emotional story about a tragedy that should never be forgotten,” said Jim Newman, news director at News 14 Carolina. Violins of Hope will also be available for viewing through Carolina On Demand (channels 199 and 1047) starting Tuesday, April 17.

The moving half-hour program includes:

  • An interview with an Auschwitz survivor who heard one of these violins played as prisoners were marched off to their death
  • Comments from UNC Charlotte Violin Professor David Russell about the project and his role in getting the exhibit to Charlotte
  • Interviews with local Rabbis about why this is such a moving and historical event

At this time, Charlotte is the only scheduled stop for the collection in the United States. They will be on display to the general public at the UNC Charlotte Center City Building Gallery from April 16 - 24. Admission is free.
