New York, NY, November 22, 2011 – Today, Time Warner Cable (TWC) announced that Jasmin Hume is the finalist from New York City for its Super Connector Search contest. Hume, a Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) student, will star in her own public service announcement for Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), Time Warner Cable’s five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to inspire young people to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). TWC will also donate $5,000 to NYU-Poly’s Applying Mechatronics to Promote Science (AMPS) and Central Brooklyn STEM Initiative (CBSI) initiative, which advocates engaging students with modern technologies such as robotics, mechatronics and sensing as a hook to stimulate them to learn about STEM.
In October, TWC launched its nationwide Super Connector Search contest, asking its customers to share how they’ve connected young people to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math.
"We’re very excited to name Jasmin Hume as the official Time Warner Cable Super Connector from New York City,” said John Quigley, Time Warner Cable’s Regional Vice President for NYC. “Customers like Hume are introducing young people to STEM experiences that are inspiring them to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. We are happy to recognize this commitment with a grant to NYU-Poly’s AMPS and CBSI initiative, a valuable resource in our community.”
“Inspiring people to pursue STEM-related fields is incredibly important,” said Hume. “My career choice has provided me with opportunities to work and study abroad, and challenge myself in an incredibly rewarding manner. If I am able to successfully transfer my passion and interest in these fields to young minds then I would feel very accomplished.”
Hume is currently a student at NYU-Poly pursuing a PhD in Materials Chemistry. She lived in Canada and Sweden for her studies and worked in Italy as a biomaterials engineer. A native of Sweden, Hume moved to New York City when she was two and grew up in Manhattan where she graduated from Stuyvesant High School.
From November 28 through December 11, anyone can vote for Jasmin Hume or any of Time Warner Cable’s other Super Connector finalists on connectamillionminds.com. The finalist with the most votes will receive an additional $10,000 grant for the STEM non-profit organization that they support.
About Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds
Time Warner Cable’s (TWC) Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; “The Connectory”, a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities; grants to support non-profit organizations that bring stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to students; TWC employees, over 47,000 strong, who volunteer their time at community events like science fairs and robotics competitions, and share their passion for engineering and technology with students at CAMM career days. TWC’s national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Local TWC markets are activating CAMM across the country with community-specific programs and partnerships.
