Kansas City, MO, Friday, January 24, 2013. More than 450 metro area girls in grades 6-8 will converge on Union Station for the 24th Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference with Science Pioneers on Friday, January 24. The lead sponsor for this year’s conference is Time Warner Cable with major grant support from The Women’s Foundation and other funding from MRIGlobal and The Women’s City Club Charitable Foundation.
The evening begins with the girls exploring Science City or viewing the film Into the Deep at the planetarium. This year’s keynote speaker is Maria Flynn, President and CEO of Orbis Biosciences, which revolutionizes the delivery, efficacy, and safety of pharmaceuticals. Ms. Flynn will share her experiences as an engineer and entrepreneur, as well as the multitude of opportunities available to women in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
The students will then have an opportunity to participate in hands-on science workshops led by female scientists or engineers who volunteer to work with the students at this event. The girls have 22 workshops from a variety of disciplines from which to choose, including: What’s in the Water; Solar Science: Mimicking the Sun Insides; Light Up Bling and Force and Motion: Balloon Airplanes.
Mary Brock, Executive Director, explains Science Pioneers’ long-term commitment to this program, “Girls don’t enter the STEM fields because they aren’t encouraged to study them early on. EYH exists to build girls’ interest and dreams of entering a STEM profession. We want them to see themselves in these most needed, highest paying, and satisfying careers.”
“This event will provide students a fun, hands-on STEM experience and the opportunity to hear fascinating experiences from women working in STEM field,” said Perry Watson, Area Vice President of Operations at Time Warner Cable. “Events like this challenge students and show them that STEM is more than just what they learn in the classroom – it’s also about solving real-world problems, allowing them to discover science and technology in a whole new way.” STEM is TWC’s main philanthropic endeavor through its Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative. CAMM is a five-year, $100 million cash and in-kind philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining STEM focus.
Student evaluations conducted after the 2013 event revealed that that 84% of the girls were interested in taking more science and math courses—the foundation for college majors in one of the STEM fields and 80% said they were more interested in a STEM career as a result of the conference. These results are strong indicators of shifts in their interests and the impact of the Conference. Shifting girls’ behaviors and interests at this age is crucial so they will take the courses required to pursue careers in STEM fields. Science Pioneers goal is to expose students to STEM careers and help them see that these fields are great career choices in addition to being cool jobs.
