Time Warner Cable Teams with World Golf Champion Ian Poulter to Host “STEM in Sports” Golf Clinic for Boys and Girls Club Members

Poulter explains the importance of STEM in the game of golf – meets with students at Carmel Country Club on April 30 at 4 p.m.

Release Date: 04/29/2013

Charlotte, NC – World Golf Champion Ian Poulter takes his golf clubs to the classroom and helps bring to life the science behind golf for members of the Milton Road and Belmont Avenue Boys and Girls Clubs. Boys and Girls Club members will learn how Poulter applies science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills daily on the golf course.

“On and off the course, science and math are a winning combination,” said Poulter. “The sports arena can provide a great venue for engaging youth. I’m personally committed to helping the next generation succeed and what better way to talk about STEM than through golf.”

Classroom lessons will include the physics, science and fun involved in golf, as well as the importance of spin, stance and club selection. Students will then have a private swing clinic with Ian and Time Warner Cable volunteers to apply what they learned in the classroom.

Time Warner Cable recently launched a new segment of its Connect a Million Minds initiative, a $100 million commitment to inspire the next generation of problem solvers by connecting young people to the wonders of STEM. The new “STEM in Sports” campaign will offer parents, coaches and other adults the opportunity to get kids interested in STEM by highlighting the roles these subjects play in sports.

“When students are asked what they want to be when they grow up, inevitably you will hear, ‘professional athlete,’” said Mike Smith, area vice president of operations, Time Warner Cable, Charlotte. “The STEM in Sports campaign capitalizes on the popularity of sports while showing students how STEM learnings can be an integral part of everything we do. We are thrilled to be able to have Ian Poulter demonstrate how he uses STEM everyday on the golf course.”

The event will be filmed for inclusion on the STEM in Sports microsite on the website. The microsite will feature videos of athletes discussing how STEM subjects impact their sports. It will also have downloadable educational materials that provide parents and coaches with ideas on how to infuse STEM learning into sports. In addition to Poulter, athletes that have agreed to participate in the STEM in Sports campaign include Victor Cruz, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon.

The STEM in sports golf clinic will take place on April 30, 2013, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Carmel Country Club, 4735 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. Interviews are available upon request.
