Time Warner Cable Launches STEM On Demand to Bring Students Across the Carolinas Additional STEM Learning

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math lessons available for students to expand their knowledge on Carolina On Demand

Release Date: 11/27/2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In its continued effort to motivate students to expand their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), Time Warner Cable has launched STEM On Demand. STEM On Demand is available through Carolina On Demand on channels 199 and 1047.

“Time Warner Cable hopes to complement STEM classroom learning by offering hands-on-learning videos from STEM organizations and experts across North and South Carolina,” says Darrel Hegar, regional vice president of operations, Time Warner Cable Carolinas. “The short videos will catch their attention with fun, interactive experiments and lessons that highlight the excitement of STEM.”

STEM on Demand is launching with a special virtual field trip produced by SPEED. The ‘SPEED EQUATION’ takes a rare behind the scenes look into how things work at a major sports network. SPEED and Time Warner Cable employees show how television shows shot and edited in studio and live on location at the racetrack are able to get from the lens of the camera to the television set in your living room and computer. A special emphasis is placed on showcasing how math plays a major role in the everyday jobs of the men and women at SPEED and Time Warner Cable from timing shows, estimating how many people watch shows and how programming goes to and from satellites in space and into homes.

“Knowing how important expanding STEM learning is for Time Warner Cable in local communities, we are excited SPEED was able to partner to bring students a virtual way to enhance their STEM lessons beyond the classroom,” says Jamia Bigalow, senior vice president distribution marketing, Fox Networks.

Along with content from programmers, segments include lessons from teachers that specialize in STEM and museum demonstrations. New segments will continue to be added throughout the year. While students will be exposed to STEM happenings throughout the Carolinas, STEM On Demand also highlights STEM opportunities in their own communities that they can visit and get involved in.

STEM On Demand is part of Connect A Million Minds (CAMM), Time Warner Cable’s 5-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to inspire young people to pursue education and careers in STEM.

To find STEM On Demand, go to Carolina On Demand and select STEM under the Education tab. Carolina On Demand is available to Time Warner Cable digital customers. Customers can watch the segments free of charge at a time that is convenient for them.
