Kansas City – Time Warner Cable today announced the launch of a program designed to offer low-cost broadband service to Kansas City area families. The program supports the goals of the FCC’s Connect2Compete national initiative, which is focused on providing low-cost broadband services to families across the United States.
“The Internet plays an essential role in the lives of Americans. Time Warner Cable is working hard to ensure that everyone has access to broadband, especially households with children who risk falling behind their peers in digital literacy,” said Perry Watson, Area Vice President of Operations for the company in Kansas City. “In this case, doing good is also good for business, as we hope this program will help families who are currently offline understand the importance of, and appreciate the benefits of, an Internet connection.”
“Efforts to improve connections to the Internet will help better prepare our children for the future by increasing their curiosity and access to knowledge,” said Kansas City, Mo. Mayor Sly James. “Businesses play an important role in giving young people in Kansas City hope, and I am thankful to Time Warner Cable for investing in our children.”
“Internet access is a crucial component to everyday living and commerce,” said Kansas City, Kan. Mayor Joe Reardon. “This commitment by Time Warner Cable to ensure our schools and families are connected is critical to enhancing the academic success of our students and sustaining our rank as one of the best places for young people to live.”
The new tier of broadband service, Starter Internet, will be available for $9.95 per month for up to two years. Starter Internet customers in the Kansas City area will also be able to access TWC WiFiTM at no additional charge.
Nationwide, five hundred fifty schools throughout Time Warner Cable’s footprint have been selected to participate in the initial phase of this program, and will be working to spread the word about its availability in their local communities. Starter Internet is being offered to families of students attending any one of the participating schools. In the Kansas City area, 85,000 students in 190 schools and in grades ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible for the Starter Internet service. TWC plans to expand Starter Internet availability to additional area school districts, with timelines to be announced at a future date.
Eligible customers can apply from now through January 31, 2013 by calling (855) 746-8704 or by visiting www.twc.com/starterinternet, where a list of participating pilot schools is also available.
