Greensboro, NC (March 31, 2011) –Time Warner Cable and the Natural Science Center of Greensboro are entering into a $160,000 multi-year partnership to fund technology enhancements and further science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education at the center.
The donation will help fund the first American installed Super Media Globe II Projector in the OmniSphere, a premier Weather Educational Center and state of the art Robotics Lab. The partnership is part of Time Warner Cable’s philanthropic initiative, Connect a Million Minds, which connects youth with STEM opportunities in their communities.
“As parents, educators, elected officials and business leaders, it’s important we take an active role by encouraging youth interest in STEM and supporting technology investments to further education,” said Dianne Blackwood, vice president of operations, Time Warner Cable Greensboro. “In the next decade, 80 percent of available jobs are expected to require STEM skills. It is critical we work in partnership with our communities to generate excitement in these areas and provide access to new technologies to help students succeed in the future.”
The new Konica Minolta Super MediaGlobe II projector at the Natural Science Center is the first of its kind in the United States to provide high definition, full-dome cinema through a single lens and projector. Greensboro was the first city in the US to acquire this cutting-edge technology.

As part of this announcement and Connect a Million Minds Week, 100 area Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are invited to an exclusive STEM educational event on April 4 from 4:30p.m. until 8 p.m.at the Natural Science Center. The invitation only event treats scouts to a unique presentation from Animal Planet’s ‘Monsters Inside Me’ host Dan Riskin. Riskin, an award-winning evolutionary biologist, will inspire attendees by showcasing his adventures and research to further demonstrate how exciting careers in science can be. Students will also view an OmniSphere show and participate in Time Warner Cable’s Cracking the Codes in the Wireless World curriculum.
Time Warner Cable’s philanthropic program, Connect a Million Minds, is a five-year initiative designed to engage and encourage young people to pursue education and career paths in STEM.
