Time Warner Cable Challenges Students to Crack the Codes in the Digital World as Part of the Company’s Connect a Million Minds Initiative

March 23, 2010, New York, NY -- Time Warner Cable’s NYC system launched the company’s signature technology curriculum, Cracking the Codes in the Digital World™, for middle school students in after school settings today at its offices in the Flatiron section of Manhattan.  Showcasing the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) which support cable television infrastructure and delivery, the curriculum is based on national science standards and will engage Time Warner Cable employees as mentors and role models.  It was developed in conjunction with curriculum experts Invent Now, Inc.

Cracking the Codes in the Digital World will launch during the company’s Connect a Million Minds® Week, March 22- 27, 2010.  Students will visit the company’s local system and unlock the mystery of energy conversion, learn the technology of geosynchronous orbit and discover the math and science in delivering digital content into the home. 

Time Warner Cable kicks off its three-day event with the launch of the curriculum on Tuesday, March 23rd.  Citizen Schools students from The Urban Assembly Academy of Arts & Letters in Brooklyn and Isaac Newton Middle School for Math and Science in East Harlem will engage in STEM-related activities and go behind the scenes to see Time Warner Cable’s technology in action.  Activities will be led by Time Warner Cable’s employees and executives in the Information Technology, Engineering and Technical Operations groups. 

On March 24th, students from Middle School 414 will arrive at NY1’s studio to see first-hand how a 24-hour news network operates.  On March 25th, students from The Urban Assembly Institute of Math & Science for Young Women in Brooklyn (participants of Girls Inc. of New York City) will meet with Time Warner Cable’s female staffers from the Information Technology and Engineering areas for a mentoring session.

According to Harriet Novet, Regional Vice President of Public Affairs, Time Warner Cable’s NYC Region, “Every day, every moment, we use science, technology, engineering and math to deliver video, voice and high speed data services to 1.4 million homes across our service area.  By bringing our Connect a Million Minds initiative in-house and engaging our employees as mentors, we are able to deliver a hands-on, discovery-based program for young people.  Learning comes in many forms – visual, manual, written, for instance – and this out-of-the-classroom experience into our operations showcases how our employees use STEM skills every day to do their jobs.  We can be the spark that encourages students to pursue STEM-related education and careers.”

Participants in Cracking the Codes in the Digital World will take part in several hands-on experiments that illustrate how a digital signal is created and transmitted, and the ways that people receive and request information and entertainment throughout the Time Warner Cable system.  It aligns with the company’s mission to connect people and businesses with information, entertainment and each other in ways that are simple and easy.

After the launch of Cracking the Codes in the Digital World, Time Warner Cable employees will be reaching out to more schools and organizations, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and Girls Inc.  Time Warner Cable is developing “Cracking the Codes in the High Speed World™” and “Cracking the Codes in the Wireless World™” for later this year.

According to Alaina Rutledge, Core Curriculum and Programs Extension Manager, Invent Now, Inc., “The Cracking the Codes in a Digital World experience will challenge participants to investigate the science behind Time Warner Cable technology.  Participants will launch mock television signals while orbiting the Earth as a satellite, create pixilated art to better understand how high definition programming is created, and demystify how television programming is delivered to their home.  Time Warner Cable will augment the experience by providing inquiry-based STEM activities, reinforce learning through application, give participants a real world perspective of STEM and encourage the next generation of scientists and technologists.”
