After Predicting Early Spring, Staten Island Chuck to Visit Local Schools in February

Release Date: 02/02/2012

NEW YORK, February 2, 2012 - Time Warner Cable once again sponsored the Groundhog Day Ceremony, held today at the Staten Island Zoo where Staten Island Chuck predicted an early spring. Designated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg as New York City’s official meteorologist, Chuck will visit several local schools and institutions where students will learn about the origin of groundhogs and the modern science of meteorology.

Time Warner Cable is also sponsoring Chuck’s home and weather station exhibit located at the Staten Island Zoo’s Children’s Center. The exhibit consists of a custom built log cabin with retractable roof and solar panels that power a functioning weather station.

“Time Warner Cable couldn’t be more excited to present the Groundhog Day ceremony and sponsor Chuck’s weather station at the Staten Island Zoo,” said John Quigley, Regional Vice President of Operations in New York City for Time Warner Cable.  “Time Warner Cable has served and operated on Staten Island for over 25 years and knows the importance of a great community partner such as the Staten Island Zoo. This year, as part of our Connect A Million Minds® initiative, we’re bringing local students a hands-on opportunity to learn more about science with Staten Island Chuck.”

The free ceremony drew notable public figures including Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Borough President Edward Burke, Assemblyman Matthew Titone, Assemblyman Michael Cusick and Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs Kate Levin. Staten Island’s PS. 22 chorus gave a rousing performance at the ceremony which was emceed by Staten Island Advance Editor, Brian Laline. Time Warner Cable kept the crowd warm by handing out handwarmers, noisemakers, and hot beverages.

“We are very thankful to Time Warner Cable for once again sponsoring this year’s WEATHER PREDICTING CELEBRATION!  Time Warner Cable’s generosity gives us the opportunity to make Groundhog Day a special celebration for the whole community to enjoy,” said Ken Mitchell, Interim Executive Director of the Staten Island Zoo.
