AKRON, OH (APRIL 16, 2012) – Instead of spending summer vacation playing video games, TECH CORPS wants to teach kids how to design and build their own video games. This summer, thanks to Time Warner Cable, TECH CORPS will give students in Cleveland, Ohio the opportunity to participate in TECHie Camp®.
TECHie Camp is a full-day, week-long technology experience designed by TECH CORPS, a nonprofit organization based in Columbus, Ohio. The TECHie Camp program engages rising 3rd – 8th grade students in hands-on, interactive activities focused on Programming, Robotics or Web Development.
TECH CORPS will partner with University Settlement, a nonprofit social service agency serving the Broadway/Slavic Village neighborhood, to implement TECHie Camp for neighborhood youth.
“TECHie Camp is a great opportunity for the youth we serve in the Broadway/Slavic Village,” said Derrick Fulton, Executive Director for University Settlement. “It is our hope this experience will provide our youth with meaningful activities that will allow them to leverage skills learned into future career opportunities.”
In 2010, only 2% of ACT-tested high school students in the U.S. indicated a career interest in Computer Science. Through the development of engaging after-school and summer technology programs, like TECHie Camp, TECH CORPS works to inspire more students to pursue technology-related educational and career pathways.
“TECHie Camp is a great hands-on resource for our future generation of technology innovators,” said Joe Richardson, Manager of Community Relations for Time Warner Cable Northeast Ohio/Western Pennsylvania. “Time Warner Cable is pleased to support this program that aligns well with our Connect A Million Minds initiative, which is designed to engage students in activities focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.”
“Time Warner Cable has been a long-standing supporter of TECH CORPS in Central Ohio,” said Lisa M. Chambers, National Director of TECH CORPS. “We are delighted that this new partnership with Time Warner Cable Northeast Ohio/Western Pennsylvania will allow us to partner with great organizations like University Settlement to serve students in Cleveland.”
TECH CORPS has also partnered with Cuyahoga Valley Career Center to offer open-enrollment camps, for dates and details, visit: www.techiecamp.org.

About TECH CORPS
TECH CORPS was founded in 1995 by Gary Beach, Publisher Emeritus of CIO Magazine. Gary envisioned an organization which would challenge American volunteers to help K-12 schools build a technology infrastructure -- much like the Peace Corps challenges men and women to help developing countries build their infrastructures. Building from a state pilot in Massachusetts, TECH CORPS developed technology programs and deployed tech-savvy volunteers to assist K-12 schools and youth-serving organizations across the country. Over the years, partners such as Cisco, HP, Intel, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, NCTA and Time Warner Cable have provided TECH CORPS with the fuel to deliver much-needed technology resources to K-12 students and teachers. Since 1995, more than 10,000 TECH CORPS volunteers have shared their time and talents assisting schools and nonprofit organizations in their communities. www.techcorps.org
