(NEW YORK, NY) – Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) continued its celebration of Connect a Million Minds Week® with the rollout of its “Cracking the Codes in the Digital World (tm)” curriculum in its operations across the country. After completing the first “Create” hands-on station participants move to the “Transmit” area. “Transmit” teaches students about the radio waves used to carry digital signals over the air and into space. By creating a coding system for transmitting information to a receiving station and increasing their comprehension of geosynchronous orbit, more than 1,500 students participating in the program will gain a deeper understanding of how their favorite television programs reach them, all as part of the company’s newly created, signature technology curriculum, “Cracking the Codes in the Digital World™.”
“It is easy to forget how technology driven watching television actually is,” said Bonnie Hathaway, Vice President, Public Affairs, Time Warner Cable. “For most of us, we simply push a button or two and there are our favorite programs. We want to remind kids that these images don’t ‘live inside the box,’ so to speak.”
Added Susan Warner, Senior Director, Public Affairs, “It is amazing to watch the interest that this curriculum generates in young people. And that interest not only motivates the kids to think about STEM in a different way, but also gets the Time Warner Cable employee/mentors excited as well.”
In addition to understanding how a television signal is transmitted, participants in Cracking the Codes in the Digital World™ also will develop a technological understanding of how a cable television signal is created and then received in the home. The program aligns with the company’s mission to connect people and businesses with information, entertainment and each other in ways that are simple and easy.
About Connect a Million Minds
Time Warner Cable’s (TWC) Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; “The Connectory”, a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities; grants to support non-profit organizations that bring stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to students; TWC employees, over 47,000 strong, who volunteer their time at community events like science fairs and robotics competitions, and share their passion for engineering and technology with students at CAMM career days. TWC’s national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Local TWC markets are activating CAMM across the country with community-specific programs and partnerships.
