Mt. Vernon, NY – June 4, 2007 – Ten Mt. Vernon High School seniors were presented with Youth Leadership Awards totaling $8,500. The program, underwritten by Time Warner Cable of New York and New Jersey, is now in its 19th year and provides students demonstrating academic achievement, community service and leadership ability with funds to be used toward college tuition.

Vernon High School students are preparing to become future leaders. They are sure to achieve their goals if they continue their current level of enthusiasm and determination.”
Students are selected based on a written application process and a video interview. Local community members served as judges for this prominent award including Ms. Karen Watts, Director, Mt. Vernon Department of Recreation, Bob Granata, President, Fleetwood Association, and Sal Carollo of Carollo Allstate Insurance.
The inspirational keynote speaker for this event was Cheryl Wills, Anchor and Reporter for NY1 News. With nearly twenty years in the broadcasting field, Ms. Wills has been recognized with awards from The Associated Press, The New York Press Club and The New York Association of Black Journalists, as well as earning an Honorary Doctorate Degree from New York College of Health Sciences.
The students plan to attend institutions including Hunter College, Harvard University and Syracuse University this fall.
