Checking for a free expansion slot on most computers is usually a simple matter of looking at the back of the computer:
- Move your computer so that you can clearly see the back of it. You should not have to open or remove the case for your computer.
- Most slots should already be filled with cards - a video card, sound card, etc. You will know they are in use if a cable/device is connected to the port. A free/available slot normally is covered by a smooth, chrome-colored metal strip to protect your computer from dust. In most cases, this will indicate that the slot is available.
Note: Some computers do not have expansion slots available. If you’re uncertain or unable to determine the availability of an expansion slot, refer to your computer’s user manual or contact the manufacturer.
