Buy your own modem or modem/WiFi router combo

We strive to offer our Time Warner Cable customers with the fastest and most reliable internet, every step of the way.

That's why you have the option of leasing your modem from us or buying your own.

When you lease your modem, we work to ensure that you have the right equipment for your Internet service level and speed. We will also provide you with technical support for your equipment. A small monthly charge will apply if you select this option.

If you prefer to buy your own modem, please refer to the instructions below to learn which modems are best for your TWC Internet service and how to activate your modem once you've purchased it.

Attention Home Phone customers: If you have one modem for your Internet and Home Phone services, you will still need the TWC-provided eMTA for your Home Phone service. Do not remove that piece of equipment; keep it connected to your phone line. See details in the "Connect your modem" section below.

Choose the right modem

It’s important that you purchase a modem that is appropriate for your Internet service level. The following modems have been tested and approved for use with TWC Internet service.

Buy from your local retail store or purchase your modem online.

If you have Internet service only:

  1. Use the instructions provided by the manufacturer to connect your purchased modem at home.
  2. Proceed to step 3 to activate your new modem.

If you have both Internet and Home Phone services:

  1. You will need a TWC-provided eMTA for your Home Phone Service.
  2. Connect your purchased modem at home using the instructions provided by the manufacturer. You will need an additional cable connection for your new, purchased modem. If you do not already have an additional cable connection, buy a two-way, 5-1000MHz coaxial cable splitter and two pieces of coaxial cable with connectors.
  3. Remove the existing cable connection from the back of the eMTA, and connect it to the “Input” connection on the splitter.
  4. Connect one end of the first new coaxial cable to one of the splitter outputs and connect the other end of that same cable to the eMTA.
  5. Connect one end of the second new coaxial cable to the other splitter output, and connect the other end of that same cable to the modem.
  6. Proceed to step 3 to activate your new modem.
  1. Locate the Cable Modem ID (MAC address) for your new modem, usually found on the bottom of the modem.
  2. Call TWC or chat online with an agent to activate your new modem:
  3. The agent will activate the new modem on your account.
  4. If you are a new customer without a leased modem from TWC, this is your last step!
  5. If you are an existing customer with a leased modem, please continue to Step 4 to return your existing modem.

Please note: Failure to return your leased modem and power cord may result in additional equipment charges and continuing monthly Internet Modem Lease charges.

  1. Once your new modem is activated please drop off your leased TWC modem and the power cord at your local TWC Store location
  2. Please note: Failure to return your leased modem and power cord may result in additional equipment charges and continuing monthly Internet Modem Lease charges.
